Gojra, the capital of Gojra Tehsil, is a city of Toba Tek Singh District in the Punjab Province of Pakistan. It is located 50 km (30 miles) from Faisalabad, and at the north of Toba Tek Singh. It has a history of more than hundred years, and being the center of the cultivated lands, the village was famous for its “Mandi” (market) for cash crops. Before the Partition the “Mandi” was mainly handled by Hindus and Sikhs.
Gojra town was established in 1896 when colonization of Lyallpur (Faisalabad) began. The railway line between Lyallpur and Gojra was laid in 1899. The town was given the status of notified area committee in 1904 and upgraded as B-Class Municipality in 1925. In 1906 the population of Gojra was just 2,589.
Gojra is also known for providing top class hockey players to national team. Two sports heroes who happen to be brothers, Manzoor-ul-Hassan and Rasheed-ul-Hassan, played an intrinsic role in making Gojra synonym of hockey.
After independence from Britain, in view of its increasing size, 1960, it was declared as 2nd class Municipal Committee. The town was raised to the status of Tehsil and in July 1982 it was affiliated with the newly established district Toba Tek Singh.
